I was once told, in a government class that I was taking as an elective, by the professor, that writing was not a viable career path.
He cited two reasons: because no one reads anymore and because no one really writes anymore.
I’m not a confrontational person, so I declined to correct him. Anyone who writes, though, has probably heard some version of this in their lifetime. But, spend any time online and you’ll realize that not only are there plenty of places that will pay you for your writing, there is also a desperate need for cogent, intelligent, clear writing.
If you’ve got a good grasp of the English language (or any language, for that matter), there’s a market just waiting for you online, a market that didn’t exist twenty years ago. If you want to make money online by writing articles, here’s what you need to know:
Yes, you get to be your own boss.
Yes, you get to do your work sitting on your bed, wearing your pajamas if you want (though this is not recommended). But finding gigs is also difficult. Keeping those gigs will be even more difficult.
It is, however, worth your time and effort.
Especially if you love writing, if you find that it comes easy to you and you honestly have a difficult time doing anything else, it is worth the hardness. Don’t be blinded by claims about how simple and easy it is to make $100 a day writing articles online.
It’s still work, and that means it comes along with all of the same pressures of work.
While you can write widely on a huge variety of topics, finding a niche that you enjoy writing about and learning everything you can about that topic is a great way to make yourself a sought-after expert.
It is absolutely possible to become skilled in writing about both search engine optimization and dog grooming, but finding your niche is about more than just becoming an expert in a topic—it also about finding a topic that you actually like, so that when you have to write about it, the words come easily.
Every writer knows that writing about something you enjoy is much more satisfying than writing about something you find boring.
When people ask me “How do I become a better writer?”
I tell them that the best way is to read.
Even if you already consider yourself a skilled writer, reading helps you fill up your word bank, which you then empty out again as you write. Most of all, however, it helps you find publications that are accepting articles.
Few people actually make money writing articles online by just sitting back and waiting for clients to find them. Instead, they go out there and track down people that are actively looking for submissions. Many online magazines will pay far more for your word count than the average client will.
This might be a little bitter for some people to hear, but if you want to build a business, you are going to have to start like almost all businesses do—small and cheap.
First, you need to get an idea for how much work you can do a day before you are simply too burned out to do anymore.
Never fear; your tolerance for writing will increase the longer you work at it.
You might start out thinking you simply cannot do more than a thousand words today, but in a few months, find yourself writing upwards of ten thousand words a day.
Second, when you are brand new, you are untested and people are not going to be willing to drop hundreds of dollars on you for a small project. Lower prices might sting a little bit, but they are going to get your jobs and as you build your client base and your business, you can gradually raise your prices.
Do you really want to make this your business? You need to get on every micro-job and freelancing website that there is. Some are going to be more appropriate for your skills or for what you want to charge for your services but do not put all of your eggs in one basket.
Even if you quickly climb the ranks on Fiverr, for example, one day, you might simply find yourself removed from the search results and no longer making the money you were. If you have clients and established profiles on many different platforms, however, you have lots of valves you can open when you need more work to do.
Even if you want to branch out and find your own clients outside of these platforms, platforms like Freelancer, Fiverr, and Upwork are the best places to make quick money for your writing and they come with built-in clientele and support systems.
Many people get discouraged when they are not making thousands of dollars a month the very first month they start working as a freelance writer. They give up and they never even give themselves the opportunity to succeed. It is going to take several months, maybe an entire year before you have built up a client base and the reputation that will make it possible to attract more clients.
Have you ever done writing as an online job? Have you ever made any money writing articles? Have you ever spent money to buy unique content? We would love to hear your experiences and your opinions 🙂
